Lime Light on Rites is a site specific performance work that explores how the media, through marketing and publicity, exploits people.
In African traditions Death is the final rite of passage whereby the deceased becomes an ancestor and will look after and guide the living. The importance of this passage has become distorted in urban areas with huge pressure placed on the family to provide a big, extravagant Funeral. This social pressure is exploited and marketing strategies trap people into buying funeral policies to cover the expenses that they cannot afford.
Death is big business in South Africa with great social pressure to have big funerals – this is compounded by the advertising and marketing strategies that play on people’s vulnerability.
