Created in residency at William Kentridge’s Centre for the Less Good Idea
Bag Beatings is an intuitive performance developed in residency, it does not have a synopsis as it was born from responding to an object and exploring its possibilities.
It is a disconcerting experiment on the boundaries of performance art, one which repeatedly evokes in the audience the feeling they are in the presence of a violent crime, before, in the next moment, reminding them of the absurdity of the basic situation. By making a lifeless object – and moreover one that has been “made for punching” – into the target, the performance explores physical violence in a way that, on the one hand, appears abstract and almost comical, and, on the other, could not be more real or unsettling.
